Prosthodontists and Orthodontists: The Teeth Stylists

cosmetic dentistryEven with the latest clothes off the runway, a woman is less than fashionable without the proper make-up and hair style. Another thing that may ruin the style is the appearance of the mouth.

The mouth is just as important as the outfit, but sometimes even the most rigorous observation of preventive care and oral hygiene just cannot fix that imperfect smile. Cracked, chipped, stained or incomplete set of teeth affects the appearance of a person, thus, it should be part of a makeover checklist.

This concern paved the way to a specialisation called cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry tackles teeth deformities and, in general, helps people get a perfect smile.

Before booking an appointment with a cosmetic dentist, a patient must first get expert an opinion. Consulting a cosmetic dentistry provider, like, for example, will offer suggestions whether one needs prosthodontics and orthodontics treatment. But what are the differences of the two?

Both specialisations are under cosmetic dentistry. Prosthodontics is also known as prostethic dentistry or dental prostethics. This is the branch of dentistry that replaces or restores missing teeth.

Missing teeth can be due to trauma, dental decay, destruction of connective tissue or congenital disorder. The remedy in this case is to wear prostheses or dentures.

Other than prostheses, other remedies include crowns or caps, inlays and onlays, bridges, implants and veneers. It is the job of an orthodontist to make sure that the replacements are comfortable and would imitate a normal set of teeth.

Orthodontics or dentofacial orthopaedics is the first recognised specialisation in the field of dentistry. Orthodontists study and treat malocclusions or misaligned teeth. This field focuses on straightening crowded, crooked, misaligned and discoloured teeth. Unlike prosthodontists, orthodontists work on the existing set of teeth.

Treatments for malocclusions include dental appliances, such as braces, brackets, wires, headgears, plastic aligners or moulds and retainers. These devices are designed to realign and reshape the teeth and may take weeks and months to be completed.

For better smile and style, the mouth must also receive the proper attention. With the help prosthodontists and orthodontists, the complete style is now achievable.
